  2. Light Field Compression using Wavelet Transform and Vector Quantization: by Li-Yi Wei, EE372, Winter 1997, Abstract Image based rendering based on light fields offers interactive frame rate that's unachievable by traditional geometry based rendering techniques. However, the requirement for a huge amount of images causes problems both in mass storage and in memory management. In order to make light fields feasible even in low end computers we have to reduce the data size. This project suggests that by using wavelet transform and vector quantization we can achieve pretty high compression ratio with minimun degradation in rendering quality. (added by phamdo@ieee.org on 05/24/2000 at 23:42 PST)
  3. Vector Quantization of Image Subbands: A Survey (1996): P.C. Cosman, R.M. Gray, M. Vetterli Abstract: Subband and wavelet decompositions are powerful tools in image coding, because of their decorrelating effects on image pixels, the concentration of energy in a few coefficients, their multirate/multiresolution framework, and their frequency splitting which allows for efficient coding matched to the statistics of each frequency band and to the characteristics of the human visual system. Vector quantization provides a means of converting the decomposed signal into bits in a manner that takes advantage of remaining inter- and intra-band correlation as well as of the more flexible partitions of higher dimensional vector spaces. Since 1988 a growing body of research has examined the use of vector quantization for subband/wavelet transform coefficients. We present a survey of these methods. (added by phamdo@ieee.org on 05/24/2000 at 23:42 PST)
