This week I tried figuring out on my own how to get the arduino to talk over serial with my computer but didn't have much luck. Luckily, I found a processing/arduino sketch pair that does a real-time graph of an analog input over a serial connection: http://www.arduino.cc/en/Tutorial/Graph This is significant because I was having some deal of trouble trying to get the computer to talk to the arduino in a reasonable way:
I soldered two alligator clips to solid core wire so the sensor can interface with the breadboard easily. It turns out (unsurprisingly) that soldering irons work a lot better when they're not covered in rust (thanks, metal file!)
