A lot about capacitors kinda flew over my head. The book goes "here are all of these things ideal capacitors do, but we never think about that."

Capacitors is parallel act like resistors in series. Capacitors is series act like resistors in parallel.
Voltage across any Capacitor in a series circuit can be calculated using (Ctotal/Cn)Vin.
You can make capacitive dividers: Vout=(c1/(c1+c2))Vin.
