Victory! Apparently there is a known bug in two star alignment that causes exactly the behavior we were seeing. Performing a one star alignment solved all the issues.

We don't want to do an open night right away. We want a night with all hands on deck so we can learn how to properly do the one-star alignment, and use a ccd camera. We'll take some photos to do promotional stuff on facebook as we gear towards having regular open nights.
