We spent last class getting our SFTP access
to "marlbororocks" at nearlyfreespeech.net.
And we also bought the domain marlbororocks.org
through nearlyfreespeech, and took the defaults
to let them do its domain name hosting.
Sincd then I've used their "Add a New Alias" command
on their "sites" section to make www.marlbororocks.org
and just plain
http://MarlboroRocks.org
point to that site.
Reminders:
host : ssh.phx.nearlyfreespeech.net
sftp/ssh username: yourusername_marlbororocks
password : same as you set for nearlyfreespeech member login
Look at homework : next round of creating web pages.
Discuss and look at the web pages I've set up at marlbororocks :
- Firebug as a web developer tool (in FireFox, Chrome, etc)
- image manipuluation basics : favicon.ico
- navigation links and multiple pages
- lists (even horizontal ones)
- using a class to change look of "current" page in nav list
... and see where the discussion takes us. Possible other topics
- box model
- look at some open source web designs and layout patterns
- "billboard" approach to web pages ; web design itself
Checking in: comfort level with all this?
ToDo: using this with content management systems (i.e. WordPress).
Where we've been
- underlying packets and protocols
- web page markup and visual display languages
Next up: bigger picture of the internet itself - what sorts of things are out there, who runs it, and what are the things to know about.
Some types of sites:
- blogging
- community content (wikipedia, youtube, ...)
- business and organizations
- search (google)
- commerce
- entertainment (games, video, audio)
- peer to peer sharing
- security
- ...
How do website owners make money?
Some "go find the answers" and/or discussion questions:
- Who runs the internet?
- What sorts of impacts on society are we seeing?
- How fast is this changing? And what's coming next?
