Read 2.1 to 2.5.
Thursday 9th Feb
- Read the rest of Chapter 2.
- Find two graphs from (online) newspapers, blogs or similar, one that you think is good and one that you think could be better. Link to them on the "everyone" page (email me the links if you're having difficulty with that). We'll talk about some of them in class.
- Play with R, in particular step through the histogram-creation file soccerr.txt linked from the resources page (which corresponds to the example from Collaborative Stats).
Tuesday 14th Feb
- Consider this collection of graphs (pdf) that have to do with the use of heating oil at Marlboro. Questions to think about: what is each graph doing? is it useful? is it clear? is there a better way to present the same data? which from the list are the most useful? are there any stinkers? if you were preparing a report that detailed our heating oil use which ones would you use? are there others that are not there but could/should be?
