• How to put files on akbar
  1. Mounting //akbar/home
     • Only on campus
     • Happens automatically when you log in at a lab compuer
     • Files/folders on akbar can be treated just like files on your local disk: drag them around, create/delete, open in editor,...
     • Recipe for mounting on your own computer:

       Note: These are Win2000 instructions.
       1. Under "My Computer", "Folder Options", turn on "Show Extensions".
          (This just makes it easier to see what's what.)
       2. Security settings need to be correct.  With mouse, choose
           Start - Settings - Control Panels - Admin Tools - Local Security Policy
          then click
           Local Policies - Security Options
          and find the one called
           Send UnEncrypted Passwords ...
          You need to click it to "ENABLED."  Close the window, and restart your computer.
       3. Double click "My Computer."
          Under the "Tools" menu, choose "Map Network Drive...".
          Click "Connect using a different user name"
          and fill in your username and password.
          If this is your very own computer, and it will be connected to 
          the network when you turn it on, then you can leave "Reconnect at
          Login" checked.  Otherwise, uncheck that.
          In the "Folder" box, type \\akbar\home
          Then click "Finish", and cross your fingers.
       

     • Once mounted, create an html/ folder, drag files (.txt, .html, .jpeg, ...) into it, and away you go.
  2. SFTP - FileZilla
     • Easier than the PuTTY one; GUI interface.
     • Will work anywhere, not just on campus.
     • First, install the application, and double-click it to launch.
     • Choose "New Site" or just fill in the fields: host: akbar.marlboro.edu
     • Connect with your username / password
     • Drag files from local disk to akbar, or vice versa

• How to look for answers and/or get help
  • www.google.com, i.e. search "windows sftp" or type the error message
  • Other good words to put in your search are "tutorial" or "FAQ". For example, search "html tutorial" and browse through some of the links you find.
  • ask a friend
  • email Jim, or come find him (check cs.marlboro.edu for Jim's schedule)
  • Please do spend some time getting comfortable with moving files between computers, creating folders, changing their names, and so on. These are basic skills that need to be comfortable.

• Types of files, programs to edit them, programs to view them - .txt, .doc, .jpeg, ...
  • A browsers will view many things...
  • but not usually Microsoft Word.

• Walk through creating a .txt file, uploading, viewing in browser.
• Same for a simple .html file.

• HTML - Hyper Text Markup Language
  • These are TEXT files, even though the extension is .html !
  • Compare with XML, and discuss "markup languages".
  • The text discusses the details of what goes in the < > brackets.

• HTTP - Hyper Text Transfer Protocol
  • Discuss how they're connected, and how they're different.
  • telnet to port 80 and talk so HTTP by hand...
