assignments
due Thu Sep 11
images 1
- Read the following wikipedia articles :
- Answer the following questions (using the "submit work" link to the right):
- What is a pixel? Are SVG images made up of pixels?
- What is the difference between a JPG and PNG image? When would you use each?
- What is "24bit color"? "32bit color"?
- What color is (255,255,0)?
- Install the GIMP and (if time allows) Inkscape on your computer, if you have one. See the software page for links. Start playing around with at least one of them. (The lab computers have GIMP.)
- Finally, tell me something about yourself :
- What experience do you have with computer applications for images, sound, video, etc?
- What particularly are you interested in?
due Thu Sep 18
images 2
- Start working on your photo manipulation. (See below).
- Come to class ready to
- share what you have so far, and
- continue working on it and/or continuing to explore the Gimp or other tools.
due Thu Sep 25
photomanipulation
- Create an "interesting" digital image by combining some digital photographs or other media.
- This is the first of four tasks in images, sound, 3D, and video; you're required to do 3 of the 4.
- Scale the size and difficulty of your project to your abilities and the available time, which is about two weeks, six hours/week.
- Questions? Ask Jim.
due Thu Oct 9
soundscape
- Create an "interesting" audio clip by combining music, voice recording, natural sounds, or others.
- Some ideas include
- Changing the word order or removing words in spoken text ... and making it sound reasonably natural.
- Composing a musical piece by shifting and altering other sounds.
- Overlaying a spoken piece (perhaps a political speech?) with music and/or other sounds.
- Again, scale the size of the task to the time (2 weeks) and your available tools / skills / background.
- Include a brief description of how you created the piece with your submissions, including the original clips and their licenses.
- And be ready to do a show and tell in class.
due Thu Oct 23
3D model
- Create a 3D model of a building or artifact with sketchup, blender, or other similar application.
- Hand in a final .jpeg image as well as the model (.blend or .kml) files.
- Include a description of what you did including time spent and techniques explored.
due Thu Nov 13
video effect
- Create a short video clip with at least one effect.
- As in these other tasks,
- The point here is to explore the technical aspects more than the artistic. Look for clarity and "interesting" more than length.
- Do include the original and/or raw files, to make the processing clear.
- Do describe what you did, and how much time/effort/exploration was involved.
- Be clear about the licenses, both on the orginals and the final work.
due Thu Nov 20
project proposal
- Describe what you're going to do for your final project.
- Be as specific as you can.
- (See below for details on what's expected.)
due Thu Dec 4
project presentations
- Come to class ready to show your work.
due Fri Dec 12
final project
- Deadline for submission of all files for the final project.
- The final project should be the time equivalent of a 10 page paper, exploring any of the technologies we've discussed this semester - or combining several. It should be similar to the sorts of projects we've been doing, only a bit more so: more documentation of what you've done, and more depth in whichever medium you choose. As throughout the semester, I'm more interested in having you explain the techniques than the "art" of what you're creating.
semester grade
- A place for Jim to record the overall grade.
