Show and tell

... with your sound projects.

3D

Heading up the "complicated" ladder : 3D programs tend to have lots of things you can do
One place to start reading about this in the abstract is
These days there's a full fledged economic ecosystem of people who design components of things (clothes, hair, fairy princesses, ...) and sell them to other people who stick them into larger 3D scenes with various lighting and/or animation stuff.
For example,
I'm going to show two applications, both free. In the two weeks that you have, you probably should pick one and work through some of the tutorials for that one to get a taste of some of the things it can do.

sketchup

Google bought these folks because their architecture design (primarily) tool is simpler to use than most. The models that it creates can be shown from within Google Earth. And there's an accessible "warehouse" of objects.
And lots of video tutorials and docs.
... do a short demo

blender

At the other end of the power/ease-of-use spectrum is blender.
Open source, full animation and game development, competes with Maya and the big boys.
Fairly unique user interface. Wikipedia says "Blender has had a reputation as being difficult to learn."
It's been used to create several animations / games that have been released as open source.
Some examples on Jim's laptop :

... do a short demo.
(I've uploaded the video files as attachments to this page.)

task

Create a 3D model.
If you choose sketchup, I'd suggest a campus building or room.
If blender, then perhaps an artifact like a "magic sword".
In either case, you should probably work through one of the tutorials first.
