Here is how to get material from the Vermont state website:

First, go to this URL:

http://vcgi.vermont.gov/warehouse/web_services/imagery

Then you will need to pic the type of imagery you want (feel free to play with different ones - perhaps start with Best of black and white state plane meters - best resolution to start.) Then you will need to hit the "Add WMS Layer" button in Qgis:

On the screen that opens, hit "New" and you will get a prompt to enter a server URL and a name. You should name it whatever the Vermont GIS service has called it (Black and White State Plane, VT or something legible), then you should enter the URL given on the website for the data set you are interested in; in this case: http://maps.vcgi.org/arcgis/services/EGC_services/IMG_VCGI_BW_SP_CACHE/ImageServer/WMSServer

NB!: You will need to add the "http://" at the beginning of the URL or QGIS will not recognize the site:

Then hit "OK" then click on "Connect" and it should give you a new image file (raster layer) in the main box that you can select and hit "add" in the bottom left of the box. This may take a minute depending on the speed of your computer, but if this all works right, you will be rewarded with a detailed image map of the state of Vermont.
