Getting Started
- Use the "submit work" link to the right, then the "edit" tab to send me your answers to these questions.
- Tell me about yourself. (We discussed this in the first class, but in case that you were shy then or I was taking bad notes...)
- What experience do you have with computer applications for images, sound, video, etc?
- What media and technologies are you interested in?
- What are you hoping to get out of this class?
- Any particular technologies you'd like to work with?
- What computer/operating_system/tools do you have access to ? (i.e. Mac laptop, Windows Desktop, campus computer lab only, iPhone, my friend's recording studio, ....)
- Any links to your previous work that you'd like to share?
- Install the Gimp on your computer, if you have one, and start exploring what it can do. See the resources page for links to installation instructions and tutorials. (The lab computers should have Gimp, too.) Google "gimp tutorial" or "gimp examples", and dive it.
- Read the following wikipedia articles :
- Answer or discuss the following image related questions.
- What is a pixel? Are SVG images made up of pixels?
- What is the difference between a JPG and PNG image? When would you use each?
- What is "24bit color"? "32bit color"?
- What color is (255,255,0)?

- Submit a proposal and description of your image project.
- Come to class :
- a) with your laptop and source photos, ready to work on (and/or discuss) that project.
- b) prepared to share a gimp technique of your choice. (See the Sep 12 class notes and/or google around for tutorials and tips.)

- Submit your photo manipulation (both gimp file and jpg output) , the originals it came from, and a description of what you did.

- Submit a proposal and description of your audio project. The generic one: create an audio podcast piece with voice and music and/or sound effects overlayed.
- Come to class with your laptop, audio files, and headphones ready to work on (and/or discuss) that project.

3D project - work in class
- Submit your thoughts for a 3D project.
- As described in class on Oct 12, the basic idea is to create something (a sword, a chair, ...) with a 3D modeling program, along the lines of one of the turorials. SketchUp is the easiest software to use (IMHO) of these sorts of applications.
- (I posted this assignment late ... so handing it in late is fine. But do let me know what you're working on.)

- Submit your 3D project, including a 2D rendered image (jpeg), the .skp or .blend (or whatever) source files, and a description of which tutorials and manuals you used to understand how the software works.
- Be prepared to share your work in class.

- Possibilities :
- stop motion (import jpgs into Gimp or google "stop motion software" and look for free trials)
- cut'n'paste youtube and/or cellphone video clips
- explore any special effects with the software you have access to (e.g. FinalCut in the media lab)

- Describe both the software you plan on using, the idea behind the work, and what sources (yours or others) that you will incorporate.
