preparation
Fri Sep 5
None
Mon Sep 8
- Sections 1.1 to 1.3 of Strang.
The important things here (and for the rest of Chapter 1, but not beyond that) are to get used to reading the book---the style, the notation and so on---and get a flavour of what the rest of the class will be about. Don't worry if not everything is clear at this stage; everything in these sections will be revisited more thoroughly (and more generally) over the semester.
Come to class on Monday with at least one comment and at least one question about something that wasn't entirely clear.
Wed Sep 10
- Sections 1.4 and 1.5 of Strang.
Fri Sep 12
None (but remember there is an assignment due at 3pm today).

Mon Sep 29
- None (but there is an assignment due at 3pm today).
Wed Oct 1
- Strang 3.2 (we're skipping 3.1; feel free to browse through it though).
Fri Oct 3
Mon Oct 6

Wed Oct 8
- Be ready for the quiz (definitions; derivatives; eqn of a straight line)
Fri Oct 10
Mon Oct 13
Wed Oct 15
- Attempt as much as you can of Assignment 2 and come in with questions
Fri Oct 17
Mon Oct 20
- No class (Hendricks Days).
Wed Oct 22
Fri Oct 24
Mon Oct 27
- None, but be sure to be ready for Wed and Fri when there is a reasonable amount expected of you.
Wed Oct 29
- Have had a good go at the assignment due on Friday and bring in any difficulties you are having.
Fri Oct 31
Mon Nov 3
Wed Nov 5
Fri Nov 7
- Be ready for the quiz. Expect three questions:
- Definitions and statements of results (e.g. second derivative test, chain rule, critical points, horizontal/vertical line test,...)
- Differentiate some functions. You'll definitely be using the chain rule at some point, but they won't all be chain rule questions---you need to be able to identify which is the appropriate rule too.
- An "other stuff" question (e.g. applying l'Hopital's rule, something with second derivatives, simple curve sketching, an implicit differentiation problem,...).
Mon Nov 10
- Nothing new, but make sure you're up-to-date with the Chapter 5 Strang readings.
Fri Nov 14
Mon Nov 17
- Have a serious attempt at Assignment 4, and come in with places where you are stuck.
Fri Nov 21
- Strang 6.1, 6.2 (this is what we've talked about in class already)
Mon Nov 24
Wed Nov 26
- Think about which bits of the course you need to brush up on before the final exxam. Mock exam attached below as mock2014.pdf.
