Google Snap Shots
In its easiest form, the assignment is only this: open the files attached below and look at each one of them. Done! (Well, not really...you've looked. Now you have to think...contemplate...reason...question...)
Wait, what should I be thinking about you might ask. Good question.
These are all google maps - snap shots of a place taken at about the same zoom level. What do you know about these cities? What can you determine from the map? What does google choose to put on the map and what does it label? What is your impression of the city given what you can see? The resolution level is important because the google algorithm changes the detail depending on the zoom. Perhaps go to your hometown (or a place you like to visit...it doesn't really matter) and get roughly the same resolution. What do you see in that map? What do you feel like is missing? Think about what you see and do not see in all of these maps (and what you might share about your hometown map if you want to show us.)
Bring these ideas to class on Friday for discussion! The assignment really is that simple. You could even try it with friends not from the class...maybe. At lunch perhaps.
