preparation
For Monday Sep 4
- Vectors and dot products. Read about them (eg Strang 11.1) and do some simple exercises: calculate lengths, dot products, angles between vectors and so on.
- Review differentiation and integration. What techniques are you finding difficult?
For Thursday Sep 7
- Make sure you've done the vector reading listed for Monday.
For Monday Sep 11
- Have had a good go at the assignment. Come with any difficulties you are having.
- Read more about vectors and 3D geometry: the cross product and equation of a plane in particular.
For Thursday Sep 14
- Browse the rest of the linear algebra stuff to get a sense for what's there (determinants, systems of equations, intersecting planes,...) but no need to go too deeply. If we need more later we'll double back and pick it up then.
For Monday Sep 18
For Thursday Sep 21
- Attempt the assignment that is due on Sunday and come ready to talk about how its going and where you're stuck.
For Monday Sep 25
- Familiarise with the material in Strang/Stewart on Motion in Space. Kepler's Laws on planetary motion is a good target.
For Thursday Sep 28
- Partial derivatives and tangent planes. Make sure you understand the limit definition of partial derivatives and can compute simple ones (the chain rule gets more exciting; that's where we're heading next). Be able to compute the tangent plane to a surface using partial derivatives. (13.1 to 13.3 in Strang; 14.1 to 14.4 in the 4th ed of Stewart.)
For Monday Oct 2
- The Chain Rule, Directional Derivatives and the Gradient Vector.
For Thursday Oct 5
- Max and Min Values.
- Have worked on the assignment due on Sunday and come with any questions.
For Monday Oct 9
- Double Integrals over Rectangles
For Thursday Oct 12
- Quiz!
- Iterated Integrals and Double Integrals over General Regions.
Monday Oct 16
Thursday Oct 19
- Double Integrals in Polar Coordinates.
