assignments
Assignments should be placed in the envelope outside my office by 4pm on the due date. Alternatively, you can upload them to the appropriate wikiacademia page.
due Fri Feb 2
Asignment 1
- Find an article that contains an example of a misleading graph. Explain why it is misleading and how it could more honestly be drawn. If you can't find such a graph, find an example of a good graph, explain why it is good, and explain how you would alter it to make it misleading (without technically lying).
- From Elementary Statistics, Chapter 1 review exercises: 7, 16, 25.
due Tue Feb 13
Assignment 2
- From Elementary Stats, Chapter 2 review (p. 87): 1, 2, 7, 8, 11.

Assignment 3

- Section 3.3 (pages 129--132): Questions 6 ("by hand"), 16, 24, 42, and 48 (q48 is in the "Extending the Concepts" section).
- Section 3.4 Questions 12 and 16.
due Mon Mar 5
Assignment 4
- From Elementary Stats, Chapter 4 review (p. 229): 8, 12, 22, 32, 40
- From Elementary Stats, Chapter 4 data projects (p.234): 4. As well as finding the average, construct a histogram for each experiment.
- Poker Challenge. You can find a description of the various hands here
- Find the probability of being dealt each type of poker hand
- Find a "median" poker hand; that is, a hand that will beat half of all other hands. Similarly, find an upper quartile hand and a 90th percentile hand.
Note: This last one is a tricky problem. Do what you can with it. We got something wrong in our in-class calculation of pairs (can you see what?) Here's a calculation for the number of two-pair hands to give you the idea:
We must choose 2 ranks from 13 possibilities, and 2 suits from 4 for each of the pairs. There are then 44 remaining cards that do not turn the hand into a full house. So the number of two-pair hands is 13C2×4C2×4C2×44 = 123552
, giving a probability of 123552 / 2598960 = 0.0475
.
