assignments
May 3
Ectrochromism lab reports due in class.
Lab notebooks due then, too.
Lab 9, March 13
Please answer the following
questions about Prussian blue and nickel hydroxide.
Lab 7, March 9
Final report of phytoremediation project is due
Questions about electrochromic compounds
- What is the structure of methyl viologen?
- Is methyl viologen toxic?
- What is the formula for Prussian Blue?
- Describe the meaning of the term "electrochromic."
- What uses are there for electrochromic compounds?
- What causes an electrochromic compound to change color?
- Is tungsten trioxide electrochromic? If so, cite one source to support your answer.
Finally, bring your lab notebooks to turn-in for review.
Lab 5, Feb 23
Draft report on phytoremediation is due
Lab 3, Feb 9; readings and questions
Here's a basic discussion of
chromatography. The GC in our lab is the
Vernier mini-GC. A little way down this page is section called Videos, with a link to a video titled "Intro to gas chromatography." Please watch this video.
Answer the following questions; bring your answers to lab on Thursday:
- What concentration of caffeine should we apply to our model wetland?
- What source did you find to support your selection of that concentration?
- What is chromatography?
- What is the stationary phase in our GC?
- What's the max temperature should we use for measuring caffeine?
Lab 2, Feb 2; readings and questions
Lab 1, Jan 26: reading and questions
- What is caffeine?
- Why did the author focus on caffeine in this paper?
- What instrument did the author use to measure caffeine?
- Cite one piece of evidence the author uses to support the conclusion that caffeine is a good indicator of anthropic pollution
Phytoremediation questions to be answered in lab:
- What is remediation in general, and phytoremediation in particular - what's the general idea, and how does it work?
- Find an example of phytoremediation of an organic pollutant(s), and an example of remediation of metal contamination.
- How are we going to measure caffeine, or any other model pollutant we select (e.g., ibuprofen, aspirin, naproxen)?
- What preparation or preliminary work do you need to do measure these compounds?
