intro class

course catalog blurb

A project based mixed level seminar looking at various internet
technologies and current practice. Students will work in various small
groups on web site, database, and related projects, then share their
experience and results in class. Recommended for those CS students doing
web related work.

discussion

The technologies of the internet and the web are ubiquitous these days, growing in complexity and scope even as they become more common and seemingly everywhere. If you work with computers at all, then it's quite likely that you'll be working with the internet.

Given the wide range of experience that you all have with all this, my idea for this semester is to come together and collaborate on a number of projects, sharing knowledge and allowing each of you to work at your level.

All of you will be presenting topics and work in class, explaining pieces of all this to the others, often within groups.

practicalities

Scheduling : Our current time slot is Mon & Thu 1:30 - 3pm, but I've already heard some concerns with that. We'll see if there's something better.

Collaboration : We'll start with this web site as a collaborative platform - I can set up folders with editing rights and privacy as needed - but may move to github or wherever for specific projects.

topics

Possible topics include :

Once we get going, assigned projects will likely include a CRUD dynamic site, possibly with a RESTful API, implemented with several different approaches by several different groups.

first assignment

To get started, I want each of you to create a website that summarizes and perhaps showcases your web skills and background. Think of this as a mini resume or job portfolio, what you want others in this group to know about what you can contribute to a project, what you're interested in, and what you have done before. Choose what tech to use to create the site and how to deploy it ... and describe that in the site itself.
