Mon Jan 27 - getting started

We'll discuss whether we want to keep the Mon/Thu meeting time or change to Tue/Thu ... and the decision is Tue/Thu 11:30-1.

We'll also get going with a birds-eye discussion of the internet and the web, using the topics at https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web .

Another excellent resource is http://intronetworks.cs.luc.edu/ ; we'll be using that (eventually) to discuss some network security stuff.

Using those resources or others that you can find by searching, be ready to discuss the basics of

TCP/IP
HTTP & HTTPS
DNS
HTML
CSS
JS DOM

We should also discuss some of the basics of

• https://codepen.io/pen/
• firefox tools
• domains, hosting, and servers

Some that cloud services that I've used (though YMMV) are

• nearlyfreespeech.net - low cost pay-per-use hosting with shell access, CGI, PHP, mysql
• namecheap.com - one of many domain name registrars
• linode.com - virtual general purpose servers (install your own e.g. node, apache, ...)

Your first (fairly open ended) assignment "create and deploy a web page" is due Thursday.
