Your work: not enough of you are submitting things through the online submission system. I'll review how that works - please do submit your work.
In class presentations :
sound and audio - general discussion
- wavelength and frequency
- wavelength (meters/cycle) * frequency (cycle/sec) = speed (meters/sec) = about 330 meters/sec
- logarithms: octaves, intervals, and decibels
- 1 octave up = 2 * frequency
- a perfect fifth up = 3/2 * frequency
- 10 decibels = 10 times louder; logarithmic scale ( 3dB ~ 2 times more, because 3+3+3~10 and 2*2*2~10)
- adding logs is the same as multiplying : log(2) + log(10) = log(20)
- this is how sliderules work (or used to work)
- music theory: circle of fifths and 'tempered tuning'
- pianos are tuned 'out of tune' : explain
- spectrum vs waveform and 'fourier transform'
- sound reproduction: microphones and speaker basics (and volt, amp, resistance if interests)
- sound files
- containers vs codes
- uncompressed (WAV), lossless (FLAC), lossy (MP3, OGG)
- MP3 is actually "MPEG-1 audio layer 3"
- basically two tricks: (1) if its busy, you can't hear the busy stuff, so delete it; (2) if its boring, compress with "repeat this"
- wikipedia: aural illusion
play around with audacity
- tracks
- fading in and out
- input and output formats
mention ardour
- multi-track recording with all the bells and whistles
- open source
- powerful but complicated (attached are some very basic MacOS notes)
possible further topics
- ... depending on interest and resources
- copyright and digital rights management
- iTunes, allofmp3.com, etc
- podcasting, RSS, and all that
- how to put audio on websites
- sound recording 'how to'
- electronic music applications - a sampler
- abc music notation
- basic music theory
- PA systems and DJ-ing
