Quiddler
Quiddler is like Scrabble with cards and no board. It’s a draw one, discard one card game, and you must get creative with letters and words in order to use all your letters in words before your opponent(s). If you don’t you have to get even more creative to use all your letters in the final turn you get after your opponent(s) use all their cards. Turns can take some time, but your opponent(s)’s turns are a fabulous opportunity to do some smack-talking. Highest score wins!
The Resistance
The Resistance is a hidden identity game of agents and spies. Members of the resistance are sent on missions by their comrades to overthrow a malignant empire, but the resistance is infiltrated by spies, double agents secretly attempting to foil the missions. The game is spies vs. resistance, with spies trying to maintain hidden identities while members of the resistance attempt to figure out who is their comrade and who is their enemy. Players must convince others that they are on the good team, vote on who will be sent on each mission, and hope their side ends up victorious.
Cards Against Humanity
People should really play the card game "Cards Against Humanity." The game can be played however you choose to play it. The main object of the game is based off the game "Apples to Apples" but it has a more mature side to it. A single person picks up a sentence and the others try to fill it out. The people can then make the sentence as weird, bizarre, or truthful as they want. This gives people the chance to as creative as they want to be. There are many card decks so variety is no issue. Not only can one person play this game with the actual cards, but one can also play it online so you don’t need to be around people to play it!
Coup
Coup is a 2-6 player card game in which the goal is to eliminate your opponents. There 15 cards in total with 3 of each of 5 characters available. Each of these characters have perks that can help you get rid of the other players. Players start out with 2 cards and 2 coins, with these they try to attain 7 coins to stage a “coup”. Staging a coup, takes one card from a player of your choice. If you get 10 coins you must stage a coup. This is a game of deception and risk. You may lose friends.
Galaxy Trucker
Up to four players compete to build and race spaceships to get vital sewer pipe supplies to the other side of the galaxy. The build and race phases mean it's like two games in one. During the build phase everyone scrambles to assemble a their spaceship from a common pool of cardboard tiles. This requires quick thinking and spatial puzzle-solving. Then in the race we see how they hold up to various random space hazards that come from a deck of increasingly dangerous cards, including meteors, smugglers and aliens. Don't get too attached to your beautiful ship!
Terminal Hacking in Fallout
A favorite game of mine isn't a standalone game, rather a minigame. Terminal hacking in the Fallout series. In Fallout doors, chests, and machines, are locked behind 1960s style terminals. The objective hacking in Fallout is to guess the password unlocking the terminal. Four guesses from list of strings are given beside ASCII symbols scattered about. A trick is to find matching braces in those characters. Click on them to remove dud passwords or reset tries. Thanks to programmers on the internet the game has been recreated as a standalone by Mitchell Thompson for anyone to play. Happy hacking!
Magic the Gathering
Magic the Gathering is a trading card game, in which you play the role of a planeswalker, a powerful wizard with a deck of powerful spells and creatures at your disposal to do battle against fellow planeswalkers. My favorite aspect of the game is the meta-game of deck creation. There are about 12,000 cards total, with more cards created every couple of months, and each player constructs a deck of sixty cards to play with each other with different strategies to go about winning. Every game of Magic is different due to the variance of deck creation.
Sheriff of Nottingham
Sheriff of Nottingham is a strategy game in which players are given the choice to speak the truth or lies in order to seize victory. The scenario is that Prince John is arriving in Nottingham and a few merchants (the players) open up shop. The players must have their wares cleared by the Sheriff (played by a different person each turn), who, if the merchants seem suspicious, can inspect their bags and confiscate illicit items, but will reward them if they are innocent. This game will put your trust in your friends and family to the test.
Carcassonne
Carcassonne is a 2-5 player tile game. To start, you place all the tiles face down and the beginning tile is set in the center. One their turn, a player chooses a tile and decides how to connect it to the already turned over pieces with the goal of building and claiming as many roads cities and fields as possible. You decide how to build your empire as you command your followers of knights, thieves, monks, and farmers. The more you build and claim the more points you earn. The player with the most points at the end wins!
