the X-Carve

Our CNC milling machine is an X-Carve from Inventables, which is at the HatchSpace in Brattleboro, a membership carpentry and maker space.

The X-Carve uses a laptop to control the movement of a DeWalt router along three axes within a 000mm x 1000mm x 65mm cutting area. It can cut wood, plastic, or soft metals (i.e. aluminum) with drill bits ranging from 1/32" to 1/4" or so and a resolution of about 0.1mm.

I've used it for two types of work.

• easy : curves and flat surfaces down to a specific depth, using Inventables own Easel browser-based software - here's a screenshot.
  
  
• hard : smoothly varying surfaces using Fusion360 ... or a similar complicated CAD/CAM software.
