Leslie - HTML tags

So I decided to research HTML because I think it was one of those things that is so simplistic I didn't understand what it was. Kind of like the purloined letter, the guy who hides a letter right on his desk and detectives tearing up the floorboards can't find it simply because it's hidden in plain site.

Thats how I felt about html. Read this was helpful in understanding what all these tags mean. But, isn't there more to this? is HTML simply a set of tags? How have we come up with so many different programming languages but somehow HTML remains, or we have things that just compile code into html(like JSX).

Jim, that's my question to you. I can review some of these tags, but ultimately want to know how HTML remained when so many other things in the landscape of programming have changed. Is it that HTML is so simple its like, how can we find enough of a problem with it to change it?

Thanks, Leslie
