- f-number :
- f/2.8 means "focal-length/opening-diameter=2.8".
- Each f-number is half as much light: f/1, f/1.4, f/2, f/2.8, ... in factors of sqrt(2).
- Larger numbers mean less light.
- Larger numbers give more depth of field
- resolution constrained by
- diffraction at high f (light at edges of aperature)
- aberration at low f (multiple paths through lens)
- modern lenses best around f/5.6-8; older lenses f/11.
- photojournalists quote: "f/8 and be there"
- human eye: f/8.3 (bright light) - f/2.1 (dark)
